4A playoffs planned for soccer, volleyball

Siuslaw Vikings cross country and football will have Culminating Week events next week.

Vikings boys soccer and volleyball will not.

Cross country still needs to qualify Thursday at district, but is a heavy favorite to win both the boys and girls titles and advance to next week's 4A championships.

Footballl filled its Culminating Week with a home game against Sutherlin on Friday, April 9.

"The OSAA has given the week back to the schools, but the 4A classification is moving ahead with a playoff model in everything except football," Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said. "4A football is doing a BCS-style state championship. Mazama and the winner of Marist and Marshfield most-likely."

Eight-school playoffs are planned for volleyball and boys and girls soccer in 4A. The six league champions and the two top-seeded second-place teams will make the field.

As Marshfield athletic director Greg Mulkey explained to OSAAtoday's John Tawa:

"For all team sports except football, the six leagues will submit their league champion and second place team to the 4A ranking committees for volleyball and boys and girls soccer.

"Each league champion will automatically be ranked in a bracket of eight along with two second-place teams. The league champions will be seeded 1-6 based on the ranking committees' decision.

"The six second-place teams will be ranked 7-12, with the top two being seeded in the seventh and eighth spots of the bracket.

"The four remaining second-place teams will be alternates in case one or more of the teams are forced to back out of the bracket play."

The Sky-Em League appears to be in good shape to snag two spots, a league champion and the runner-up. Cottage Grove and Junction City share first place at 8-1 with one match remaining.

Cottage Grove is at Siuslaw on Thursday, while Junction City plays Marshfield in Reedsport.
