Vikings sweep boys, girls state XC crowns

The Siuslaw Vikings are kings and queens of the Oregon 4A cross country world.

Saturday, the Vikings swept both the boys and girls state titles at the Marist Catholic 5,000-meter course in Eugene.

Junior Riley Colton finished fifth overall to lead the five-member Lady Vikings team to an 81 to 87 victory over Sisters for the top two spots in the 12-school finals. Baker was third with 89.

Junction City senior Anika Thompson, who will run at Oregon, won in 17 minutes, 57.3 seconds.

Junior Chad Hughes and sophomore Samuel Ulrich both finished in the top 10 as the Vikings boys won with 70 points to 77 by runner-up Philomath and 81 by Sisters.

Ethan Hosang of Sisters won the boys title in 15:26.7.

Colton finished in 19:34.7, followed by senior Brea Blankenship, 13th in 20:23.5, and senior Gracie Freudenthal, 16th in 20.43.1

Solid finishes by freshmen Jane Lacouture (27th in 21:26.8) and Corduroy Holbrook (35th in 21:51.5) in the 82-runner field brought it home for the Lady Vikings.

Hughes led the Vikings boys with a time of 16:19.4 to finish eighth, while Ulrich was on his heals in ninth in 16:23.4.

Also scoring for Siuslaw were sophomore Kyle Hughes, 15th in 16:48.5; senior Jaxson Jensen, 19th in 16:59.7, and freshman Brayden Linton, 28th in 17:24.4.

Vikings freshman Dylan Jensen was 33rd in the field of 87 boys in 17:45.2 and sophomore Jacob Blankenship 48th in 18:42.5.

The top six Siuslaw boys each ran personal record times.

Six of the seven runners finishing ahead of Chad Hughes are seniors, and the seventh, Philomath sophomore Brody Bushnell, finished just .2 of a second ahead in 16:19.2. …

Three of the four runners finishing ahead of Rylee Colton are seniors, but the fourth is Sisters sophomore Elia Thorsett who was second in 18:22.4  Thorsett won the 4A title in 2019 in 17:43.70, with Thompson second in 18:05.30 and Siuslaw's Hannah Rannow third in 18:34.00 …

Both Lady Vikings freshmen — Jane Lacouture and Corduroy Holbrook — ran personal-record times … Riley Colton and Gracie Freudenthal posted season-best times, while Blankenship had a strong performance despite still recovering from an injury …
