The Siuslaw Vikings varsity softball team should be athletic if not overly experienced as it eyes its season opener Tuesday at Cottage Grove.

Siuslaw battles Elmira at 3 p.m. Friday in a home-opening doubleheader. The Lady Vikings play a 15-game, all-Sky-Em League schedule.

Only three of the 17 players on the current varsity roster were members of the last Lady Vikings varsity team in 2019.

Senior second baseman Lizbeth Garcia-Galvan and junior shortstop Bailey Overton offer Siuslaw a solid start at the keystone positions. Adrianna Edwards will be the primary catcher for her senior season.

Three players are up from the 2019 junior varsity team — senior first baseman Kya Blake, junior outfielder Brooke Olson and junior pitcher Maggie Manning.

Manning and freshman Cate Waggoner are expected to share pitching duties. Oregon freshman Nina-Grace Aaron threw pretty much every pitch for the Lady Vikings the past three seasons.

The Vikings have a number of players from other sports new to the roster, including volleyball libero and wrestler Hayden Muller, a junior outfielder, and sophomore cheerleaders Ava Coggins and Gillian Norton.

Five of the players were on the varsity volleyball roster, including Blake, Muller, Waggoner and freshmen Meika Shappell (third base) and Ashley Hennessee.

Filling out the current roster are sophomore outfielder Bailey Myrick and freshmen Chloe Aaron, Brynlee Manues, Rosa Velasco-Mendez and Kristin Wall.

Siuslaw was 5-16 overall and 5-10 in league in 2019, winning four of its final five games. …
