Vikings fall to 1-1 with 22-7 loss to Elmira

Siuslaw baseball coach Tom Shinn saw some silver linings in Friday's 22-7 loss to visiting Elmira.

The second game of the scheduled Sky-Em League doubleheader was suspended in the top of the fourth, the Falcons leading 13-8.

"We ran the bases aggressively, which I like to see," Shinn said. "We reduced the number of strikeouts in this game."

The Vikings were undone mostly by errors, committing 11 in the opener to none by Elmira.

"We have to work at reducing the number of errors to help pitchers reduce the amount of pitches they have to throw in a game," Shinn said.

Vikings starting pitcher Elijah Blankenship, a senior right-hander, was charged with nine runs in 3.1 innings, but only one of those runs was earned.

Singles by Blankenship, senior catcher Jason Garcia and senior third baseman Dalton Stinger accounted for the three Vikings hits in the opener. The also had an RBI each.

Blankenship scored two runs and stole a base and Garcia had two runs.

Elmira jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, but Siuslaw tied it at 6-6 after two. Elmira went ahead with a run in the third and three runs each in the fourth and fifth.

The Falcons shortened the game by plating nine runs in the top of the sixth, invoking the 10-run rule when the Vikings failed to respond in the bottom of the inning.

Elsewhere in league play, visiting Marist Catholic rolled Cottage Grove in a pair of 5-inning games, 20-0 and 27-1, and Marshfield split a twin bill at Junction City. Marshfield won the opener, 11-0, and Junction City the nightcap, 9-5, in a game called after 5 innings due to darkness.

Next week, Siuslaw plays Tuesday at Marshfield and a doubleheader Friday at Marist Catholic.
