Vikings bust some smiles, clay in opener

Joel Sissel hit 43 of 50 clay targets for the high score for the Siuslaw Vikings in Week 1 of the Oregon Clay Target League spring season.

"This week we saw HUGE growth in my athletes," Siuslaw coach Sean Grundon related by email, emphasizing huge.

"They are starting to show confidence in their abilities. Team captain Morgan (Delle) showed she can keep up and beat the boys with a 37/50 score."

Nineteen of the team's 21 team members posted scores either Monday or Thursday at the Siuslaw Rod and Gun Club. League results will not be available until May 3.

As scores improved, something else remained the same.

"Safety is still the No. 1 priority, but you should watch them bust a smile when they bust a clay," Grundon said.

"They are enjoying themselves, having fun and are disconnected from technology while getting fresh air."
