Marist Catholic rallies for sweep of Vikings

Marist Catholic pushed home the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh Friday to complete a Sky-Em League baseball doubleheader sweep of the visiting Siuslaw Vikings.

Marist Catholic won 13-3 in five innings and 11-10 to improve to 6-0 overall and in league.

Siuslaw, 1-5 overall and in league, hosts Junction City at 5 p.m. Tuesday and Cottage Grove in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday at Jiggs Dodson Field.

"It was an exciting game," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said of the nightcap. "We were aggressive on the base paths.

"I was really happy with the way the men continued to work and grind out at bats."

Senior catcher Elijah Blankenship was 2-for-5 with a double, three runs, an RBI and four stolen bases.

Sophomore Ian Sissel was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, junior Isaac Garza scored a run and drove in a run and sophomore Victor Ayala had a double and two RBIs.

In the opener, junior Beau Erickson, Blankenship and junior Jason Garcia accounted for the Vikings' three hits, with Erickson stealing two bases and scoring a run, Blankenship collecting a double and an RBI and Garcia scoring a run.

"Errors again put us in a difficult place," Shinn said. "Of the 13 runs, we gave in Game 1, only six were earned.

"I felt we did a better job of putting the ball in play and making Marist have to get outs."

Only 11 of the 24 Marist runs were earned, with the Spartans taking advantage of 16 walks and 12 Siuslaw errors while compiling 17 hits.
