Vikings grind down Gladiators to go to 3-0

Siuslaw senior quarterback Beau Erickson punched the ball in from the 2 with 5:58 to play Friday to lift the Vikings to a 15-7 nonleague football victory at Gladstone.

The Vikings (3-0) host defending 3A champion Cascade Christian of Medford next Friday at Hans Petersen Memorial Field.

Cascade Christian (1-1) lost at home to 4A No. 2 Marist on Friday, 41-16.

The Vikings broke the scoreless tie with a 9-yard Camp Lacouture run with 2:50 left in the first half, capping a drive that started inside the Gladstone 20 following a short punt.

The Gladiators (1-3) forged a 7-7 tie with 9:44 to play on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Brayde Owen to Hayde Owen on fourth-and-15.

Siuslaw responded with a nine-play, 65-yard drive, all on the ground. Lacouture ran the 2-point conversion for the final 8-point cushion.

The Gladiators went three-and-out on the following drive, the Vikings taking over on their own 20.

Siuslaw ran out the clock on an eight-play drive that included a fourth-down conversion on fourth-and-6 from the Vikings' own 24 with 3:12 to play.

Erickson connected on a 9-yard pass to senior wide receiver Braydon Thornton for the first down.

From Don Hunt, Vikings football historian and Siuslaw graduate: Friday's 15-7 win over Gladstone upped Siuslaw's record to 3-1 over the Gladiators in a series that dates back to 1974. The Vikings defeated the Gladiators 14-0 in the state quarterfinals in 1974, beat them 35-14 in a first-round state playoff game in 2007 and lost to the Portland area school 29-9 in a second-round game in 2013. Friday's contest was the first regular-season matchup between the two schools. ...

The Vikings have scored 113 points in three games, just under 38 points a game ... Senior Camp Lacouture has scored 44 of those points on 5 TD runs, 8 PATs and 3 conversion runs ...
