Siuslaw junior Samuel Ulrich ran a personal-record 16 minutes, 8.8 seconds and senior Chad Hughes was sixth in 16:40.4 Saturday to lead the Vikings to the team title in Boys Division 2 Varsity 5K in the Nike Portland cross country race at Blue Lake Regional Park in Fairview.

Siuslaw totaled 93 points to easily outpace second-place Mountainside (Beaverton) with 111, third-place Cedarcrest (Duvall, Wash.) with 157 and Cleveland (Portland) with 169.

Marist, the only other Sky-Em League team in the race, was 11th with 311.

Siuslaw junior Kyle Hughes was 11th in 16:47.3, sophomore Dylan Jensen 35th in 17:45.1 and sophomore Talan Ross 40th in 17:49.4, all personal records.

Sophomore Brayden Linton was 106th in 19:05.1 and junior Jacob Blankenship was entered but did not start.

Some 155 runners finished the 5,000-meter course.

Ulrich started strong, and was positioned second after the first mile in 5:03.7. He grabbed the lead at the two-mile marker, held it at the 4K split and finished in a virtual tie for first with Lake Oswego sophomore Leo Cook, who also clocked 16:08.8.

Chad Hughes was 16th after the first mile but steadily made up ground to finish sixth.

Next up for the Vikings is their legendary home meet, the Woahink Lake Invitational next Saturday at Honeyman State Park.
