Vikings make home season debut Thursday

Siuslaw 2021 graduates Elijah LaCosse, left, and Ryan Jennings are helping coach the Vikings wrestling teams this season.

Siuslaw Vikings boys and girls wrestling teams make their home debuts Thursday when the Sky-Em Dual Meet Championships are held at Glenn Butler Court.

The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students K-12, available online at bit.ly/siuslawtickets.

"The girls have been impressive thus far, and the boys are gaining momentum," Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik said. "It will be interesting to see how we come together after the break."

The meet brings together five of the six Sky-Em League schools — Cottage Grove, Elmira, Junction City, Marshfield and Siuslaw. Marist does not have a wrestling team.

"The team is sunk with illness right now, and Omicron has nothing to do with it," Wartnik said. "I have no idea how Omicron will affect us. It has had no effect to date."

If healthy, the Vikings have 24 boys and 8 girls on their roster.

Junior Mason Buss is 12-2 and Hunter Petterson 9-7 for the boys, who had a number of athletes from the state champion football team who got a late start for wrestling.

The Lady Vikings, on the other hand, have been outstanding, fourth among 24 schools at the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff, fourth of 25 at the North Bend Coast Classic and fifth of 21 at the season-opening Paul Burlison Tournament at Cascade in Turner.

(Cascade will host the 4A state championships this season, and Siuslaw will be one of four regional tournaments.)

Seniors Bailey Overton at 120 pounds and Hayden Muller at 140 lead the Lady Vikings with 7-2 records, both finishing first at Cascade and second at both North Bend and Grants Pass.

Sophomore Makayla Freeman is 6-2, senior Brooke Olson 4-6, freshman Macali Lade 3-5 and junior Madison Petterson 1-5. Senior Chris Hoover and sophomore Rosa Velasco Mendez still are seeking their first wins.

Olson, Velasco Mendez and senior Dante Galli of the boys team are all members of the Siuslaw cheerleading team.

Thursday's meet is the first of 11 events remaining this season, four at Siuslaw.

NEW BLOOD IN COACHING

The Vikings have two assistant coaches — Ryan Jennings and Elijah LaCosse — who were members of Siuslaw's team last spring.

"One of our goals is to help develop future coaches and wrestling leaders," Wartnik said. "Both Ryan and Elijah LaCosse are part of that vision.

"They are young men with good character and lots of experience. Both will be working intensively with wrestlers — helping them refine their technique and develop their individual systems."
