Ulrich third in 3,000 for top Vikings finish


Five Siuslaw Vikings boys and one girl placed Friday in the morning finals of the OSAA Class 4A track and field state hampionships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The Siuslaw boys share second place after the first day with Newport with 21 points. Marshfield lead with 32, while Astoria and Henley share fourth with 20.

For the boys, Samuel Ulrich was third and Chad Hughes fifth in the 3,000 meters, Jonathan Rose fifth in the discus and Kyle Hughes fifth and Camp Lacouture sixth in the pole vault.

For the girls, Rylee Colton was seventh in the 3,000 meters.

Rose will compete in the boys' shot put final later Friday, while Hunter Petterson (200, 400), Ulrich (800) and Noel Hernandez (300 hurdles) race in prelims.
