The Siuslaw Vikings baseball team's best season since 2014 is over, the Tillamook Cheesemakers escaping with an 8-7 OSAA 4A play-in win Friday at Tillamook.

Over, but not soon forgotten.

"With tonight drawing our season to a close, it truly was one to remember," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said.

"Our community should be proud of the grit with which this (team) played all season long."

Siuslaw (10-16) spotted the Cheesemakers (10-10) a 5-0 lead through two innings, then mounted a signature comeback, highlighted by a five-run, fourth-inning rally.

Siuslaw junior Ian Sissel drove in four runs with a three-run double in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth.

"Ian Sissel really came on strong with the bat at the end of the season and tonight was no different," Shinn said. "His double with bases loaded in the top of the fourth (inning) really helped swing the momentum in our favor."

Beau Erickson was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, Isaac Garza 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Jason Garcia 2-for-3.

Senior Junior Gonzalez got the win in relief for the Cheesemakers.

Both schools were playing their first play-in game since 2014.

"I am extremely proud of this team and the resiliency they showed all season long," Shinn said. "Tonight was just another example of how these guys never give up.

"Being down 5-0 after the second (inning) they continued to work the at bats until things finally broke our way."
