Coast Radio goes 21st century this fall

Coast Radio sports broadcasts this fall will feature something new and something blue with the marriage of new technology and an old broadcast friend to the Florence community.

Fiber internet will reach Coast Radio studios this fall, and general manager Jon Thompson is gearing up for expanded Siuslaw Vikings Blue and Gold coverage.

"Robbie (Wright) promised us Hyak fiber by September, so (we are) hoping we will be able to consistently stream high school sports, etcetera," Thompson said.

Station upgrades also will be a boon to Mapleton sports.

"I'm working with Zac (Burtt) at the (Siuslaw News) on maybe covering more Mapleton games this fall, with our KCFM translator upgrade," Thompson said. "The upgrade in Mapleton extends our reach further up the river.

"We can now reach Swisshome, Indian Creek and even places in Deadwood on 103FM. Yet to be determined, but that's what we are working on."

There also is something old this fall.

The veteran broadcast team of Bob Sneddon and Randy Paredes returns to cover Vikings football.
