Vikings plan for full JV schedule for football

There is something of a silver lining to the Siuslaw Vikings varsity football team playing five of eight games on the road this fall.

The junior varsity will play five of eight scheduled games at home.

The Vikings JV opens its season first, playing South Umpqua on Thursday, Sept. 2, at Tri City. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m., as are all JV games.

Siuslaw next has its home opener, hosting the Brookings-Harbor JV on Monday, Sept. 13.

Eight games is the most the Vikings have had since a nine-game schedule in 2013, current head coach Sam Johnson's senior year at Siuslaw.

The 2021 schedule has an open date in Week 5, just like the varsity.

The Vikings had seven JV games in 2014, five in 2015 (Tim Dodson's last season), four in 2016 and 2017 (during Jamin Pool's stewardship), six in 2018 (Chad Smith's one season) and five in 2019 (Sam Johnson's first season).

Siuslaw had no JV games this past covid-impacted season.

The Vikings have an 18-player JV roster, including two juniors, seven sophomores and nine freshmen.

Sophomores Bill Massey and Cort Waggoner also are listed on the Vikings' current 20-player varsity roster.
