The Siuslaw Vikings worked overtime Thursday night in their two girls volleyball matches in Newport, beating the Cubs in five games and losing to No. 2 Junction City, also in five games.
Junction City, ranked No. 2 in 4A by the Oregon Schools Activities Association, beat Siuslaw 11-25, 25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 15-10 to improve to 7-0 for the season, all against nonleague schools.
Scores of Siuslaw's win over Newport were not available.
Junction City swept Newport, 25-18, 25-10, 25-16 to finish round-robin play 2-0. Siuslaw was 1-1 and Newport 0-2.
Elyssa Rose had 25 kills and 10 stuff-blocks on the night, while Makenzie York had 18 kills and seven stuff-blocks, according to statistics reported to Coast Radio (http://www.kcfmradio.com/?p=20163).
Siuslaw opens league play next week with a match Tuesday at South Umpqua and the home opener Thursday against Marshfield. The Vikings are now 3-1, including season-opening sweeps of Philomath and Elmira.
Newport plays Stayton and Cascade next week to begin Oregon West Conference play. Junction City launches Sky-Em League play next week with matches against Sweet Home and Elmira.
