Teter is Coast Radio's Athlete of the Week

Siuslaw linebacker Marshall Teter normally doesn't take handoffs from the quarterback.

But the one he took Friday night from opposing quarterback Kaleb Miller made a big difference in the Vikings' 24-6 victory over Pleasant Hill in a nonleague football game at Hans Petersen Field.

That handoff, and some important plays in pass coverage, earned the 5-foot-10, 185-pound senior Coast Radio's Athlete of the Week Award.

"It was almost like a handoff," Teter said, recalling his fumble recovery at the Siuslaw 1. He returned the ball to the 14, where the Vikings ran out the final seconds to preserve a 7-6 halftime lead.

"It seemed like the quarterback crawled on top of the pile, and he tried reaching out to get it across the plane (for a possible touchdown)," Teter said. "I just pulled it out and went with it."

The Billies had driven 58 yards on 13 plays in the closing minutes. Teter took the handoff on the 14th play and the Vikings took a knee on the next play to run out the clock in the second quarter.

"He made some really nice plays," Siuslaw coach Tim Dodson said of Teter. "Obviously, the fumble was the biggest one. But he did some things in pass coverage that were really very fundamentally sound.

"Other people wouldn't notice. They were the kind of game changers because of what he did. He played a very, very good football game."

But in character for these Vikings, Teter wasn't about to take full credit.

"I feel I've worked hard enough (for the award), but I believe all my teammates have worked hard for it, so they deserve part of it, too," he said.

Teter lauded the play of the defensive linemen Michael Mason, Dylan Jennings, Sean Rojas and Trent Reavis.

"Our D-line does amazing out there," Teter said. "We can't really do anything without them, and I can't thank them enough."

Teter also had high praise for defensive backs Caleb Paredes, Ryan Dennis, Preston Mitchell and Scott Gordon.

"Our DBs are outstanding," Teter said.

Then there are linebackers, Brogan Cornish and Reese Siegel on the outside, and fellow inside linebacker Kenneth Thrall, whom Teter refers to as his partner in crime.

"We do this drill every day, sort of a fast-slow drill, and we're right next to each other during most of the time we're practicing," he said of Thrall. "We try to help each other out as much as we can."

Honorable mention for the Coast Radio honor went to senior setter Hannah Bartlett of the Siuslaw girls volleyball team.

Senior wide receiver Scott Gordon was the Week 1 Athlete of the Week, with junior middle blocker Elyssa Rose honorable mention.

The Athlete of the Week is presented each week during the school year by Coast Radio, the Siuslaw News and the Sports Club.
