Siuslaw falls to Douglas in four games


Douglas ground out a 25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 26-24 victory over Siuslaw on Thursday to forge a four-way tie for second place in Far West League girls volleyball.

On Saturday, the short-handed Vikings lost two matches in Grants Pass. Hidden Valley swept Siuslaw 25-21, 25-15, 25-15, while Cottage Grove won in four games, 25-13, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18.

Makenzie York had 10 kills and three blocks, Taylor Dotson six kills and Maci Wells had three aces, 10 digs and 100 percent serving for the match against Cottage Grove.

Siuslaw nows shares second place with Douglas, North Bend and South Umpqua at 2-2. Marshfield is atop the league at 4-0, while Brookings-Harbor is sixth and last at 0-4.

Makenzie York had 11 kills and a block and Anna Mintin 4 aces and 100 percent serving for the match.

"Maci Wells had 23 digs and filled in tonight as libero," Siuslaw coach Angie Herring said. "She did a great job playing defense."

Rachel Hickam and Darian Mitchell had 10 kills each for Douglas, while Molly Lavin-Williams had 28 assists and 4 aces. 

Elsewhere Thursday, Marshfield kept its grip on first place with a sweep of South Umpqua, 25-12, 25-14, 25-16, in Coos Bay.

Marshfield, ranked No. 3 in 4A by the Oregon School Activities Association, is 13-0 overall. South Umpqua is 3-5.

Hailee Woolsey had 13 kills and Shaylynn Jensen had 26 assists and 8 aces for Marshfield.

North Bend defeated visiting Brookings-Harbor, 25-14, 25-12, 25-16, and is now 5-6 overall. Brookings-Harbor fell to 1-11.

Brittney Kubli and Olivia Peck had four kills each for North Bend.

Also Thursday, No. 1-ranked Sisters swept Junction City 25-11, 25-23, 25-8. Junction City beat Siuslaw 3-2 earlier in the season.

On Tuesday, Siuslaw swept Brookings-Harbor in Brookings, 25-12, 25-14, 25-9.

Claire Waggoner had 13 points on serve and was 100 percent on serving Tuesday. Elyssa Rose had 15 kills and a block and Hannah Bartlett had 21 assists and 4 aces.

The Vikings' week of long road trips concludes Saturday in Grants Pass, where they will play Hidden Valley at noon and Cottage Grove at 1:30 p.m.

Siuslaw has two home matches next week, completing first round play with a match with North Bend at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Vikings open the second round next Thursday, hosting South Umpqua at 6 p.m.

The Vikings beat the Lancers in their league opener in Myrtle Creek, 3-1.
