Booster club has big plans for 2015-16

SABC president Gina Castro-Brandt and member-at-large Jim Archer.

It was a busy session Monday for the Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club, which cleared several items on its plate while putting on more.

Item A on its new business list was a benefit run Nov. 21 in partnership with the PTA's Health Fair.

"Instead of Move Your Bones, we've changed it to a fall fun run," SABC president Gina Castro-Brandt said. "The PTA already had a run scheduled, so we thought we'd get more people by conjoining the events."

In other new business, the board:

B. Approved payment of $3,428 for scoreboard back lighting.

C. Discussed holding occasional 15-minute executive sessions following the monthly open meeting.

D. Discussed, as a fundraiser, an SABC discount card for Eugene stores.

E. Approved further discussion of a "Triple Threat Award" for Siuslaw student-athletes who play at least three sports per school year over three years while maintaining at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Four students would have qualified for the honor during graduation ceremonies last spring, according to Siuslaw athletic director Jeromy Graybill, who proposed the award to the board.

F. Discussed helping pay for safety rails on gym bleachers at the high school. The rails would help senior citizens and others negotiate seating.

G. Approved a letter of gratitude for Siuslaw Project Graduation's donation of $500 to the Ian Foster Fund.

"This is definitely noteworthy, this was awesome," Castro-Brandt said of the donation. "Siuslaw High School Project Graduation, which sends our graduates to alcohol-free parties, had leftover money, and they decided to donate it to the Ian Foster Fund."

The board also announced some of its goals for the 2015-16 school year.

First, the board determined it will dedicate 30 percent of money raised to funding programs. Each middle school athletic program was given $500, while high school programs were given $1,000 each.

Programs also can approach the board for additional funding.

Some 70 percent of money raised will go to "priority projects," which include:

— Investing $10,000 in the Western Lane Foundation for an endowment/scholarship fund for Siuslaw student-athletes.

— Helping fund a scoreboard for the middle school gym.

— Helping pay for an electronic reader board, which would cost upwards of $30,000. The permanent site of the reader board has yet to be determined, but likely would be near or on campus.

— Also in the discussion stage is long- and short-term funding of an expanded weight room and a special fund for a "rooter bus" to a handful of major road events.

Monday's meeting was the first as president for Castro-Brandt. Other officers for the coming year include past president Jack Butler, vice president Jennifer Waggoner, secretary Lynnette Holdahl, treasurer Eric Tanikawa, membership chair Kim Pickell and member-at-large Jim Archer.

New boys basketball coach Will Biggs and his wife, Marisa Hawk, also were in attendance. (See separate story on ExplodingWhaleSports.com.)
