Mans is Coast Radio's Athlete of the Week

Cross country standout Celie Mans has been named Coast Radio's Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 4.

The Siuslaw junior won the individual race by more than a half minute Saturday to lead the Vikings to the girls varsity title at the Paul Mariman Invitational in Philomath.

Mans completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 39.0 seconds, her best time of the season.

"Celie is fit from a great summer of training, and she ran steady and looked strong the entire race," Vikings coach Chris Johnson said. "She is undefeated at the Mariman Invitational for her high school career."

Mans' time was her best in three attempts at the Mariman. She won as a sophomore in 19:42.82 in 2014 and as a freshman in 18:56.81 in 2013.

The victory was Mans' first of the season, coming off second-place finishes in the North Bend Tugman Invitational (19:40.50), the Prefontaine Memorial Run (18:58.3) and the Woahink Lake Invitational (19:14.7). She was 11th in the Ash Creek Festival in 19:16.6.

Siuslaw won the girls team title with 71 points, with Molalla second with 79 and South Umpqua third with 94.

"The girls won, but we certainly received a scare from Molalla," Johnson said. "We have to get better and be more focused if we hope to win the league.  Both North Bend and South Umpqua are strong this year."

Siuslaw has two more events prior to district qualifying Oct. 22 and the 4A state championships Oct. 31.

Saturday, the Vikings are entered in the George Fox Cross Country Classic at Willamette Mission State Park near Brooks.

Siuslaw's annual 3,000-meter Run for the Brownies is scheduled for Thursday, Oct., at Sandpines Golf Links.

District qualifying, aka 4A-3 Far West League Championships, is Thursday, Oct. 22, at Tugman State Park, just north of North Bend. The state meet is Halloween Day at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Mans is the first non-football player to win the honor this school year.

Siuslaw seniors Scott Gordon, Marshall Teter, Preston Mitchell and Kenneth Thrall won in prior weeks.
