Vikings look to sweep visiting Bruins tonight


The Siuslaw Vikings will be looking for a season sweep of visiting Brookings-Harbor when they host the Bruins in a Far West League girls volleyball rematch Thursday (Oct. 8) at Glenn Butler Court.

The junior varsity game is scheduled for 5 p.m., the varsity for 6 p.m.

Siuslaw, 4-3 in league and 7-6 overall, swept Brookings-Harbor 25-12, 25-14, 25-9 in their first-round match at Brookings on Sept. 22. The Bruins, 1-14 overall, are 0-7 in matches and 0-21 in games in league play this season.

In other matches Thursday, unbeaten Marshfield (7-0, 16-0) can clinch the league title with a victory over visiting North Bend (3-4, 8-10), while South Umpqua (4-3, 5-6) hosts Douglas (3-4, 5-6).

Tuesday, setter Shaylynn Jensen had nine kills and 23 assists as the Marshfield clinched a share of the league title with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-13 sweep of visiting Siuslaw.

In other matches Tuesday, South Umpqua won at North Bend 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-11, 15-12), and Douglas routed visiting Brookings-Harbor 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-10).

Tuesday's match for Siuslaw appeared to slip away in the second game, when the Vikings held a 19-11 lead only to see the Pirates rally.

"We blocked well in the second game," Siuslaw coach Angie Herring said.

For the Vikings, junior Elyssa Rose had 8 kills and 3 blocks, freshman Makenzie York 4 kills and 3 blocks and senior Taylor Dotson 7 kills and 1 block.

McKenzie Allison had 7 kills, Kelsey Jackson and Gracie Brugnoli 6 each and Alex Locait 5 for Marshfield.

Regular-season league play ends next week.

On Tuesday, Douglas is at Siuslaw, Marshfield at South Umpqua and North Bend at Brookings-Harbor.

Next Thursday, Siuslaw is at North Bend, Marshfield at Douglas and South Umpqua at Brookings-Harbor.
