Vikings to honor their seniors Tuesday night

Tuesday is Senior Night for four Siuslaw Vikings volleyball players at Glenn Butler Court.

Hannah Bartlett, Taylor Dotson, Ali Scheer and exchange student Anna Minton will be playing their final Far West League match at home.

First serve against the Douglas Trojans is set for 6 p.m.

"It's been a great season, but it's going to be sad for me," Bartlett said.

"We have the parents come down, and we give them gifts, kind of recognize them."

Underclassmen will be organizing the night's festivities as they go through the process of saying goodbye to some good friends as well as teammates.

"It's going to sad," junior middle blocker Elyssa Rose said. "I'm not going to be excited for it. We're going to miss the seniors so much."

Junior outside hitter Claire Waggoner agreed.

"It will be hard to see them go," she said.

"On and off the court, we're all really good friends."

Overshadowing the festivities will be a grudge match of sorts with Douglas as the Vikings begin to focus on the postseason.

"I'm really excited to play Douglas," Bartlett said. "Last time we played them we were missing a lot of our key players.

"But now we have 'em back, and we're ready to take it to them."

Douglas won the first-round match Sept. 24 in Winston in four hotly contested games, 25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 26-24.

"It went down to the wire in the fourth game," Waggoner said. "It was really tough, almost like we weren't meant to win that night, because of all the things that happened."

Now Douglas stands between the Vikings and a home playoff match in the postseason.

Siuslaw currently shares second place in league at 5-3 with the South Umpqua Lancers, whom the Vikings beat twice during the regular season.

South Umpqua is all but assured a 1-1 record this week, playing unbeaten Marshfield on Tuesday and winless in league Brookings-Harbor on Thursday.

Siuslaw plays at North Bend on Thursday, with a sweep of the Trojans and Bulldogs all but assuring the Vikings of a home date for a play-in game to the 4A state playoffs.

Should Siuslaw split, they likely would be faced with beating South Umpqua for a third time to secure the league's No. 2 spot in the state playoffs.

But first things first. Tuesday it will be time to celebrate the seniors, and take care of Douglas.

"I think we're going to bring it to 'em, and show 'em what we've got," Rose said.
