Pirates thwart Vikings in 2 OTs, 27-21

Backup quarterback Ben Martin connected with Matt McAllister for a 22-yard touchdown pass in the second overtime as the Marshfield Pirates pulled out a 27-21 victory over the Siuslaw Vikings on Friday night at Hans Petersen Field.

The win moved Marshfield to 2-0 in Far West League football play, 5-1 overall. Siuslaw fell to 1-2 and 4-2.

North Bend leads the Far West League at 3-0 following a 38-28 victory at South Umpqua. In other league action, Brookings-Harbor beat visiting Douglas, 27-12.

Siuslaw plays its final home game of the 2015 season this Friday against Douglas. Kickoff is 7 p.m. for what is a combination of homecoming and senior recognition night for the Vikings.

Friday night, there was no way the Vikings could have built a game plan for the heroics of Martin, who is listed as wide receiver/defensive back on the Pirates' 49-man travel roster.

"Martin has never played quarterback before in his life," Marshfield coach Josh Line said. "We repped him a little bit in the summer, but other than that, he's played nothing other than wide receiver.

"I'm super proud of him."

Pirates starting quarterback Gary Jantzer, who scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, left the game in the second quarter with what was feared to be a broken finger. He was taken to the hospital where it was diagnosed as a dislocated pinky finger on his throwing hand.

With Jantzer injured, and the backup quarterback not available, Martin was given control of Marshfield's ground-control offense.

He promptly tossed an interception, to Vikings defensive end Reese Siegel, who returned the ball 41 yards.

Still, Martin kept the Pirates offense moving, if not scoring points.

Then came overtime, when he ran 22 yards for a touchdown in the first extra period, then produced the game-winner on third-and-goal from the 22 in the second.

Siuslaw had an answer for Martin's first score, tying the game in the first overtime with an 8-yard run by quarterback Preston Mitchell and the extra-point kick in the rain by Kenneth Thrall.

"Preston Mitchell is the best quarterback we've played against this year," Line said. "And that Thrall kid, I'm just amazed at how much toughness he has.

"(Dylan) Jennings is such a great guard and nose tackle. And Scott (Gordon), No. 3, he's just a phenomenal athlete, super quick."

The Vikings had the ball first in the second overtime, and it was a disaster. Starting on the 25-yard line, the Vikings turned it over on downs after a false-start penalty, a 1-yard gain, a 2-yard sack and two incomplete passes.

It was the Pirates' game to win. The Vikings did not make it easy.

With the ball placed 25 yards from the end zone, the Pirates scored on the ninth play of the series, McAllister taking the screen pass from Martin around left end unscathed into the end zone. It was McAllister's first reception after piling up 161 yards on 35 carries

Earlier on the winning drive, Martin converted a first down on a fourth-and-10, hitting wide receiver Justin Cooper at the 13.

Martin then scooted another 10 yards for a first-and-goal at the 3.

A fumble for a loss of 2 and a 3-yard loss sandwiched around a major penalty put the ball back to the 22, setting up the Martin-to-McAllister clincher.

The Vikings had forced overtime by taking the ball 66 yards for a score in the last three minutes of regulation, helped by three major penalties on the Pirates. The third penalty, a pass interference call, gave the Vikings first and goal from the 4.

Junior running back Cade Clawson, all of 5-foot-5, 120 pounds, then swept right for the touchdown and Thrall tied the game with an extra-point kick with 58 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Marshfield built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on runs of 1 and 23 yards by Janzter. The first score came on the opening series, a 10-play, 59-yard drive, all on the ground. The second TD capped a seven-play, 79-yard drive, again all on the ground.

Siuslaw chipped away with a touchdown in the final minutes of the second quarter. The Vikings drove 61 yards in nine plays, the final 21 yards a keeper by Mitchell with 2:31 before halftime.

The outcome leaves both teams a bit uncertain about their futures. Marshfield is playing one less league game because Douglas cancelled the previous week following the shootings at Umpqua Community College.

"I don't know what's going to happen," Line said. "I think the league is going to have to vote on it. It won't matter if we win all of our games. We're the gatekeepers of our destiny. If we keep winning, we'll be fine."

The Vikings, on the other hand, will need to take care of business the next two weeks, when they should be favored at home against Douglas this coming Friday and on the road against Brookings-Harbor the following Friday.

Two wins likely would put them in a play-in game on the road in the state 4A tournament.

"We do play better at home," Gordon said after Friday's game. "It's going to be disappointing if we have to play on the road.

"I'm happy that we even have a chance to make the playoffs. Even if we're not on (Hans Petersen Field), we'd get to play football together, at least one more time."
