Some silver linings on a rainy night

Friday's game had some great moments for the Siuslaw Vikings, despite ultimately losing the game in two overtimes to the Marshfield Pirates, 27-21.

There was another interception by 6-foot-6 sophomore defensive end (23) Trent Reavis. He and his fellow defensive end, (84) Reese Siegel, had a pick each in the game.

"You get an interception, you're excited for the moment," Reavis said. "But you just have to flush it, and go to the next play."

There was junior running back (8) Cade Clawson's touchdown run from the 2 in the closing minute of the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

"(9) Kenneth Thrall was my lead blocker and I couldn't have done it without him," Clawson said. "Coach (Tim Dodson) wanted me to go inside, and follow my block, but I didn't want to risk going through the line.

"So I tried scooting outside for the end zone, and it worked out."

Thrall made the extra point to tie the game, going 3-for-3 in extra-point kicks. Thrall is now 21-for-22 in 2015, for a .955 percentage that would be a school record for a season.

There were some fine defensive plays.

(24) Caleb Paredes made a big stop of Pirates running back (34) Matt McAllister for a 4-yard loss on second-and-goal from the 5 in the second overtime.

Seniors (4) Preston Mitchell and (51) Michael Mason met McAllister in the backfield for a 4-yard loss earlier in the series.

Mason also picked up a big sack early in the fourth quarter, dropping Pirates quarterback (2) Ben Martin for a 12-yard loss. That was a critical tackle in the Pirates' 19-play drive, one that ultimately ended in a botched pooch kick of minus-2 yards not long after Marshfield had driven to first and goal on the Vikings' 10.

And there was (3) Scott Gordon's 11-yard pickup on a reverse play on the Vikings' late drive to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

So now there is this coming Friday to prepare for, a homecoming/senior recognition night with the Douglas Trojans the featured guests.

"Senior night is going to be awesome," Gordon said after Friday's loss. Gordon is one of 11 seniors who will be playing their final game at Hans Petersen Field.

After Douglas, the Vikings finish on the road at Brookings-Harbor, then await their playoff fate.

"As far as we know, they're the best two teams in the league," Reavis said of Douglas and Brookings-Harbor, already talking like the senior he'll be in two years.

"We just have to prepare better this week, and come in and fight as hard as we can."

Even the postgame attitudes had a silver lining.
