Friday is homecoming/senior recognition

The Siuslaw Vikings are entering the home stretch of their Far West League football season with one last home game and one last road game.

It will be homecoming/senior recognition night Friday when the 4-2 Vikings host the 1-4 Douglas Trojans at Hans Petersen Field.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

"We'll line up and announce the seniors, one by one," Siuslaw coach Tim Dodson said of this Friday's game. "Otherwise, it's just another football game."

Back-to-back six-point losses to North Bend and Marshfield have put the Vikings in a precarious position as the Oregon Schools Activities Association 4A playoffs near.

Dodson still is unhappy with his team's performance in last Friday's double-overtime loss to Marshfield.

"I watched the game film, and we weren't any better," he said. "We did exactly wrong what I thought we did wrong (on Friday). We played a team that wasn't as good as us, and we didn't play very well."

"It's not the scoreboard. I'm sometimes not happy when we win by 50 points. It has to be about how we play and how we perform and how we execute."

THE SENIORS
No. Player, positions as listed in official game roster
3 Scott Gordon, wide receiver-defensive back
  4 Preston Mitchell, quarterback-defensive back
5 Ryan Denning, wide receiver-defensive back
  9 Kenneth Thrall, running back-linebacker-placekicker
20 Carsson Davidson, wide receiver-defensive back
21 Brogan Cornish, running back-linebacker
24 Caleb Paredes, wide receiver-defensive back
42 Marshall Teter, tight end-linebacker
51 Michael Mason, offensive lineman-defensive lineman
68 Sean Rojas, offensive lineman-defensive lineman
84 Reese Siegel, tight end-linebacker

Dodson and the Vikings still are very much in the playoff hunt, and close the regular season playing the league's two lowest-ranked teams.

"Anybody can beat anybody on any given night," Dodson said. "The kids are trying. They're always trying. It's not like they're trying to be bad. We just have to play better."

Douglas, which is coming off a 27-12 loss at Brookings-Harbor, is 0-2 in league and ranked No. 37 of the 39 schools vying for the OSAA's 24 playoff spots.

Brookings-Harbor, who the Vikings play on the road next week, is ranked No. 35. The Bruins are 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league.

"As far as we know, (Douglas and Brookings-Harbor) are the two best teams in the league," sophomore defensive end Trent Reavis said. "We just have to prepare better this week, and come in and fight as hard as we can."

Siuslaw is ranked No. 18 in the current OSAA standings, and would appear to be a lock for a play-in game should the Vikings win their final two games.

At No. 18, the Vikings may have an outside shot at a home play-in game on Oct. 30, though Dodson is not optimistic.

"For the seniors, Friday's the chance to play on the home field," Dodson said. "Lot of years we get another game on our field, but this year we won't.

"So it's truly the end of a career playing at home."

Seven league champions and the highest-ranked team among the No. 2 league teams (Group A) receive byes into the first round of the 4A playoffs.

The remaining six No. 2 league teams and the two highest-ranked No. 3 league teams (Group B) would be home for a play-in game against the remaining eight highest-ranked teams (Group C).

Siuslaw went 5-3 in the regular season in 2014 to qualify as a Group C team. The Vikings beat Marshfield, 14-0, in Coos Bay in the play-in game, then lost at Mazama, 42-12, in a first-round game.

These are the possible outcomes for the Vikings:

Win both games, and the Vikings are a lock as a Group C team, a long-shot as a Group B team.

Split the two games, and the Vikings are a likely Group C team, playing on the road in the playoffs.

Lose the final two games, and the Vikings are likely out of the playoffs.

Complicating the picture is the game that was cancelled Oct. 2 between Marshfield and Douglas. Marshfield, for instance, could finish 2-2 in league should the Pirates lose their final two games, both at home, to South Umpqua and North Bend. Siuslaw could be No. 2 with a 3-2 record.

There has been no announced resolution to how the cancelled game will be handled, with the league hoping it will be resolved on the field.

And that is where the Vikings will be Friday, enjoying homecoming, senior recognition night and likely their last home game of the season.
