Vikings stay sharp at Marshfield Tournament

The Siuslaw Vikings still do not know who their next post-league opponent will be, but they continued to stay sharp with some matches Saturday in the Marshfield Invitational girls volleyball tournament in Coos Bay.

Siuslaw won two of three matches after advancing from the morning's pool play into the consolation bracket.

The Vikings beat Myrtle Point, 25-22, 25-12, and North Valley, 25-11, 18-25, 16-14, to make the finals of consolation play.

Junior Elyssa Rose had 14 kills and freshman Makenzie York six kills and three blocks.

In the finals, Coquille won 26-24, 25-20.

"Clark Waggoner served 10 points with two aces and had some great defensive plays," Siuslaw coach Angie Herring said.

Unbeaten Marshfield won the tournament, beating Ashland in the championship game, 25-15, 25-20, to improve to 21-0 on the season.

The Pirates are the only unbeaten team among state 4A teams.

The Vikings, No. 2 behind Marshfield in the Far West League, will host a third-place team from another league in the 4A play-in round.

Siuslaw's is No. 14 in the latest Oregon School Activities Association ratings, as of 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19.
