Siuslaw overwhelms Douglas, 42-20

SPARKLING SENIOR MOMENTS FOR GORDON, MITCHELL AND THRALL

Scott Gordon, Preston Mitchell and Kenneth Thrall were among 11 Siuslaw Vikings enjoying a senior moment Friday night at Hans Petersen Field.

Gordon returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown and Mitchell and Thrall combined for five TD runs as the Vikings defeated the Douglas Trojans, 42-20.

Siuslaw moved to 5-2 overall, 2-2 in the Far West League, and all but assured the Vikings of a state 4A play-in game Oct. 30 with a date at Brookings-Harbor all that's left of the 2015 regular season.

Elsewhere, Marshfield mauled South Umpqua 50-6 and North Bend bounced Brookings-Harbor 47-7 to set up a winner-take-all civil war game next Friday for the league title.

Thrall capped a 75-yard, 11-play drive with a 2-yard TD run to start the second half as the Vikings began to impose their will on the Trojans, taking a 28-7 lead.

Mitchell took away any remaining suspense by bolting 56 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter as Siuslaw went up 35-7.

The teams traded scores in the final quarter.

Douglas made it 35-14 on a 2-yard touchdown run by junior Matt Gibson with 8:11 left in the game.

Thrall countered with a 9-yard sweep for a TD with 6:17 to play, then added his sixth point-after kick of the night as the Vikings led 42-14.

The Trojans answered quickly, junior quarterback Carter Dahl connecting with senior wide receiver John Wanamaker for a 64-yard TD pass to make it 42-20.

The Vikings grabbed the onside-kick attempt and ran out the clock behind sophomore quarterback Trent Reavis and junior running back Nick Steinman.

Mitchell scored on runs of 1 and 42 yards as the Vikings raced to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

Gordon ran an interception back 90 yards for a touchdown, and with 1:37 to go before halftime, Siuslaw was on top, 21-0.

Douglas gave itself a glimmer of hope by marching 55 yards down the field in six plays, Dahl and Wanamaker connecting on a 3-yard scoring pass 11 seconds before halftime.

For the night, Dahl was 29 of 37 for 296 yards, with two interceptions and two touchdown passes, according to Jo De and Bob Hylton's official game statistics.

Mitchell completed 15 of 19 passes for 168 yards.
