Rojas earns all-state, Coast Radio honors

Victoria Rojas, front row at right, is the first all-state cheerleader for longtime coach Diane Conlee, top row, second from the left.

Siuslaw sophomore Victoria Rojas has gone where no other Viking has gone before.

She went to the Oregon Cheerleading Coaches Association's individual competition Saturday in Springfield and returned to Florence one of seven members of the all-state team for schools 4A and below.

For that she was named Coast Radio's Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

"I was super excited about it," Rojas said. "It was really weird at first, but it was a good feeling, too. It makes you feel like you're good."

Rojas finished fifth among 45 competitors statewide to earn the honor. Keneley Tams of North Bend was sixth and made the team, as did two competitors from Sweet Home, two from Klamath Union and one from Gladstone.

"It's very, very exciting," cheerleading coach Diane Conlee said. "I've had some girls before do some individual competitions, but never had one make it on the all-state team."

Conlee took two of her sophomores — Rojas and Tailyn Bello — to the all-day competition at Thurston High School.

"When you looked at the scoresheet, both the girls had all the skills that were on the sheet," Conlee said. "I knew it would be successful for them."

Rojas, the younger sister of Vikings football lineman Sean Rojas, says she has been competing in cheerleading for seven years, including competitively in her home state of Arizona.

"She has great tumbling passes, and tight standing tumbling," Conlee said. "Her jumps are good, and she's an entertainer when she dances.

"And she has good crowd-leading skills."

She also has a lot of stamina for an even that went from 9 in the morning to after 5 in the afternoon.

"The competition was good, and it's an all-day thing," Conlee said. "The best of the best were there."

Now she's the Vikings' first all-state cheerleader.

"I'm really excited, and feel honored to coach them," Conlee said of Rojas and Bello. "And I'm very excited about being included in (Coast Radio's) athlete of the week.

"Cheerleading is such a team sport that it's hard to pick an athlete. This is one of the only opportunities we have to recognize individuals for outstanding skills in cheerleading.

"This is a huge, huge accomplishment for us."
