Win tonight may send Vikings to Prineville

The Siuslaw Vikings will be looking for some payback today against the Cottage Grove Lions while setting up a possible trip to Prineville for the first round of the 4A state girls volleyball playoffs on Halloween.

Siuslaw hosts Cottage Grove at 6 p.m. today (Tuesday, Oct. 27) at Glenn Butler Court in an Oregon School Activities Association play-in game.

It will be the second meeting of the season between the schools. Cottage Grove beat Siuslaw on Sept. 26 at Hidden Valley High School in Grants Pass, 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18).

The Vikings (11-8) are the Far West League's No. 2 team, rated No. 14 among 4A schools by the Oregon School Activities Association. The Lions (8-12) are the Sky-Em League's No. 3 team, rated No. 18 by the OSAA.

Douglas is at Tillamook and North Marion at Hidden Valley in the final play-in matches.

Corbett, Philomath, Sutherlin, North Valley and Junction City already have advanced, with only the Junction City game considered a mild upset. It had no effective change on the first-round pairings, with matches scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31.

Hidden Valley is ranked No. 6 by the OSAA and Tillamook No. 8.

If all three home teams win as expected today, Siuslaw likely would be heading to Prineville on Saturday to play No. 4-rated Crook County, which had a bye into the first round.

Siuslaw likely would be moved down a slot as the teams are reseeded for the first round so the Vikings aren't paired with fellow Far West League member Marshfield, which is rated No. 3.

(The Pirates lost their first match of the season Monday night, falling to 6A Sheldon 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-19) in a non-league match in Eugene.)
