Take a guided walk at Honeyman State Park

It's not too late to sign up for A Walk by Two Lakes, an American Volkssports Association-sanctioned event Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Honeyman State Park.

Participants should gather by 9:45 a.m. at The Sportsman in Florence, 249 Highway 101, to register for the 10-kilometer walk, which will be guided by members of the Yachats Coastal Gems Volkssports Club.

The walk will begin near the Lake Woahink Day Use parking area. (From the Sportsman, you drive south across the bridge to Honeyman State Park, turn left on Canary Road and, about a half mile in, turn right into the parking area.)

Registration is not required, nor do you have to complete the course.

"You can walk whatever distance you want," club spokesperson Sally Ross said. "The course is 10 kilometers for those wanting IVV credit."

IVV stands for Internationaler Volkssports Verband, an achievement-based awards program established as an incentive "to keep you on a path to better fitness and wellbeing. It provides rewards for participation in self-paced, noncompetitive IVV events."

A Walk by Two Lakes takes walkers along the shores of both lakes Woahink and Cleawox. Dogs are allowed but must be on a six-foot, non-extendable lead.

The walk is rated 1B, with the "1" for incline/elevation and the "B" for terrain. (Walks are rated 1 through 5 for incline/elevation and A through E for terrain. A flat route on pavement would be rated 1A, while a beach walk would be rated 1C.)

A walk with an incline/elevation rating of 1 describes a trail as "very small hills or very little stair climbing."

A walk with a terrain rating of B indicates "a significant part of the route is on well-groomed trails with very few obstacles."

A Walk by Two Lakes is the next-to-last Coastal Gems walk of the year. The final walk of the year will be Dec. 1 in Depoe Bay. The club holds a monthly walk throughout the calendar year.
