Dodson record is what it is: Outstanding

The Siuslaw Vikings have crossed the bridge that was the 2015 season, and now it is what it is as we crunch the numbers.

Longtime team statisticians Bob and Jo De Hylton are still fine-tuning the record book, but there still are some milestones to be shared now.

Well-respected coach Tim Dodson logged his 150th career win, and is now 152-58 in 20 seasons as the Vikings' head man. The 6-3 record was his 18th winning season.

Some players also built on their legacies.

Senior Kenneth Thrall connected on 33 of 34 point-after kicks, a .971 percentage, the best in Vikings' history. For his career, Thrall made 114 of 128 PATs for an .890 percentage, second-best in Siuslaw history.

(Brazil exchange student Henrique Sotello hit 54 of 57 attempts in 2011 for a .947 percentage, which is the top career mark and the former top single-season standard.)

Thrall also launched a 62-yard punt at Hidden Valley for the fourth-longest in school history. Thrall will finish as the eighth player in school history to score more than 200 points in a career once the final numbers are in.

Senior wide receiver Scott Gordon had a statistical oddity, finishing with 679 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions in both 2015 and 2014. He will be either second or third on the all-time career receiving yards list once the Hyltons have finished their work.

Gordon also returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown against Douglas on Homecoming/Senior Recognition night. That will enter the record books as the second-longest in school history.

(Collin Cram-Watkins holds the school record with a 100-yard return for a TD in 2003 against Klamath Union.)

Senior quarterback Preston Mitchell completed 100 of 173 passes for 1,037 yards and 10 touchdowns. His completion percentage of .578 is the ninth-best single-season mark in school history.

In other unofficial statistics, Mitchell had a team-high 749 yards rushing on 115 carries and 11 touchdowns. Thrall had 129 carries for 724 yards and 10 TDs.

The Vikings had 19 takeaways for the season, while turning the ball over seven times, five on fumbles.

Sophomore Trent Reavis had five takeaways (3 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions) to lead the team. Mitchell had four interceptions and Gordon two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Senior Marshall Teter recovered two fumbles while Thrall had a fumble recovery and an interception. Seniors Reese Siegel (interception) and Michael Mason (fumble recovery) each had a takeaway.
