Coast Radio honors Vikings' Rose, York


Siuslaw High School middle blockers Elyssa Rose, a junior, and freshman Makenzie York continue to earn postseason honors for their volleyball exploits.

Tuesday, Coast Radio picked Rose as its Athlete of the Week and York as honorable mention following their selection as Far West League first-team all-stars.

The second team included two Vikings, senior setter Hannah Bartlett and senior libero Ali Scheer.

Rose and Bartlett were both first-team all-stars in 2014.

Sophomore outside hitter Emma Collins earned an honorable mention.

Marshfield won top league honors, with senior McKenzie Allison named most valuable player and Tammie Montiel voted coach of the year.

Others on the first team included senior Hailee Woolsey of Marshfield, junior Darian Mitchell of Douglas and junior Emma Lind of South Umpqua. Marshfield senior Carli Clarkson was named first-team libero and Marshfield junior Shaylynn Jensen first-team setter.

Completing the second team were senior Ally Schofield of Douglas, junior Kelsey Jackson of Marshfield, junior Ashley Shew of Brookings-Harbor, senior Mackenzie Davis of South Umpqua and North Bend sophomores Amanda Powley and Brittney Kubli.

Also earning honorable mention honors were Marshfield freshmen Mallory Heyer and Alex Locati, South Umpqua seniors Karlie and Alexis Westbrooks, Douglas senior Dallas Rincon and North Bend junior Olivia Peck.

Siuslaw was 6-4 for a second-place finish in league. The Vikings lost a tough five-set match to Cottage Grove in a 4A state play-in game to finish the season 11-9 overall.

Marshfield, the league champion at 10-0, has advanced to the state 4A quarterfinals, and will play Sutherlin at 10 a.m. Friday at Forest Grove High School.

The Pirates finished the season rated No. 3 by the Oregon School Activities Association. Sutherlin was No. 11.

In other quarterfinals Friday:

  • No. 1 Banks vs. No. 9 Hidden Valley, 8 a.m.
  • No. 4 Crook County vs. No. 5 Valley Catholic, 8 a.m.
  • No. 2 Sisters vs. No. 10 Tillamook, 10 a.m.

Semifinals are 6:30 p.m. Friday and the championship match is 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
