They're big, they're small, they're ladies, they're gentlemen.
They're the Siuslaw Vikings wrestling team, which began practice Monday, Nov. 16, with the first meet of the season Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Perry Burlison Invitational at Cascade High School in Turner, a few miles southeast of Salem.
Anchoring the team is a pair of heavyweights from the Vikings' football team, senior Dylan Jennings and junior Kainan Lane, both of whom were state qualifiers last season.
Two lanky cross-country team members, sophomore Ricky Huff and freshman Murray Bingham, will turn their tough-minded athletic spirit from the great outdoors to the 28-foot wrestling circle.
Siuslaw is working on building a girls roster, with Eyza Abbas, Katelyn Rogers and Kimberley DeJesus already on board.
Junior Scott Simmons, a transfer from Indiana, and senior Andrew Tupua, a two-year letterwinner, also are expected to make major contributions.
Most of the Vikings' meets are on the road, but there are two events at home, including the Far West League Crabpool on Jan. 7 and the Nick Lutz Invitational on Jan. 16
Neil Wartnik is in his 21st season as head wrestling coach at Siuslaw.
