Phoenix holds off Lady Vikings, 51-47


The Phoenix Pirates turned the tables on the Siuslaw Vikings girls basketball team Friday, posting a 51-47 victory on the first day of the Sky-West Crossover Tournament at Douglas High School in Winston.

Siuslaw defeated the Pirates, 45-31, at Phoenix on Dec. 5.

Siuslaw, which fell to 2-8 on the season, plays Klamath Union at 12:45 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 9) at Douglas High School. Klamath defeated South Umpqua on Friday, 44-18.

Vikings junior Destinie Tatum had a team-high 16 points while senior Sierra Potter and junior Abby Watkins had 10 each.

Tatum (10), Potter (8) and Watkins (8) unfortunately combined for 26 of Siuslaw's 37 turnovers.

Tatum and freshman Annabel Tupua led the Vikings with 9 rebounds each.

Siuslaw shot better from the field (19 of 53, a .358 percentage) than from the free-throw line (8 of 23, .348).

The Sky-West Crossover Tournament, matching teams from the Skyline League and the Far West League, concludes the Vikings' preleague schedule.

Siuslaw opens Far West League play on Friday, Jan. 15, at South Umpqua.

The Vikings' league home opener is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, against Marshfield.
