Vikings should be favored in league opener


The Siuslaw Vikings girls basketball team opens Far West League play Friday at South Umpqua with a little wind in their sails.

The Vikings (3-8) have won two of their last three games as they prepare for the Lancers (1-12), who have lost their past 10 games.

Game time is 6 p.m.

The Vikings league home opener is Tuesday, Jan. 19, against the Marshfield Pirates, also at 6 p.m.

Siuslaw has picked up a nonleague game to fill its Tuesday, Feb. 2, bye, hosting Sweet Home at 5:45 p.m. Sweet Home, a member of the Sky-em League, is 3-6.

Junior Destinie Tatum leads the Vikings in scoring (129 points) and rebounding (112) through the team's first 11 games. Senior Sierra Potter is second in scoring with 94 points and senior Taylor Dotson is second in rebounding with 70.

Potter also leads the team in steals with 30 and assists with 12. Dotson leads the team with 10 blocked shots.

NOTES: Siuslaw is rated No. 37 among Class 4A's 40 schools by the Oregon School Activities Association. South Umpqua is No. 40. ... In games against common opponents, Siuslaw is 2-4 and South Umpqua 0-6. ... Turnovers have been problematic for Siuslaw, which is averaging 27 a game.
