Vikings top South Umpqua in league opener


Junior Destinie Tatum and senior Taylor Dotson combined for 30 points Friday to lead the Siuslaw Vikings girls basketball team to a 45-31 victory over the South Umpqua Lancers in a Far West League opener at Myrtle Creek.

The win was the Vikings' third in their past four games and improved their overall record to 4-8. South Umpqua, losing for the 11th game in a row, is 1-13.

Tatum hit 8-of-18 shots to score 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Siuslaw. Dotson had 13 points and 6 rebounds before fouling out.

The Vikings open league play Tuesday, Jan. 19, hosting the Marshfield Pirates at 6 p.m.

Marshfield dropped its league opener Friday, 35-28 to visiting Brookings-Harbor.

Elsewhere, Douglas defeated North Bend, 47-44, at Winston.
