Siuslaw falls in Far West League opener


Senior Nathan Thompson scored a game-high 17 points and Cody Gray had 12 points and 9 rebounds to lead South Umpqua to a 53-20 victory over the visiting Siuslaw Vikings in a Far West League boys basketball opener Friday.

The Vikings, 0-12 overall, next host 4A's No. 1-rated Marshfield Pirates at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Senior Preston Mitchell scored a team-high 9 points for Siuslaw, which made only six field goals and 7-of-21 free throws on the night.

The Lancers, 7-7, put the game away by outscoring the Vikings 21-1 in the third quarter.

Elsewhere, Marshfield defeated Brookings-Harbor, 41-21, and North Bend beat Douglas, 34-29.
