Siuslaw heads to Douglas meet Saturday


The Siuslaw Vikings wrestling team heads to Winston on Saturday for the Douglas Invitational. Weigh-in is 8 a.m., first match is 10 a.m.

Last Saturday, sophomore Richard Huff and senior Talamoa Tapua won individual titles to lead the Vikings to a second-place finish in the 12-school Sutherlin Wrestling Classic.

Glide won the team title with 167.5 points, followed by Siuslaw with 124, Philomath 119.5 and Douglas 119.

Huff pinned Trayson Weidman of Cascade Christian in 1 minute, 29 seconds to win the 113-pound weight class, while Tupua won by an 11-6 decision over Wyatt McCarthy of Coquille at 152 pounds.

The Vikings also had two second-place finishers in freshman Matthew Morales at 106 and junior Scott Simmons at 138. Senior Dylan Jennings was third at 220, while freshman Murray Bingham at 126 and junior Kainan Lane at 285 had fourth-place finishes.

Siuslaw is entered the Far West League Crab Pool at South Umpqua on Feb. 4 and the Cottage Grove Invitational Feb. 5-6.

The regional tournament is Feb. 19-20 at Henley High School in Klamath Falls, and the state tournament is Feb. 26-27 in Portland.
