Vikings prepare for two meets this week


The Siuslaw Vikings wrestlers will be in action three days this week, Thursday (Feb. 4) at South Umpqua in Tri City and Friday and Saturday (Feb. 5-6) at Cottage Grove.

Thursday, the team leaves mid-morning for the Far West League Crab Pool, with weigh-ins at 1 p.m. and competition beginning at 3 p.m. at South Umpqua High School.

Friday, the team departs for Cottage Grove at 8 a.m. for 10 a.m. weigh-ins and competition at noon.

Saturday, the team departs for Cottage Grove at 6 a.m. for 8 a.m. weigh-ins and competition and 10 a.m.

The meets are the final competition scheduled before the regional meet Feb. 19-20 at Henley High School in Klamath Falls.

The state championships are Feb. 26-27 in Portland.

Last Saturday, junior Scott Simmons and senior Talamoa Tapua won individual titles to lead Siuslaw to a third-place finish in the 12-school Douglas Invitational in Winston.

Simmons won at 138 pounds with a 4-0 record, defeating Brady Jarret of Coquille in the finals, 5-3.

Tapua pinned all three of his opponents, including Alonzo Nalls of Brookings-Harbor in the finals in 3:24, to win at 160 pounds.

Sophomore Richard Huff at 113 pounds and junior Kainan Lane at 285 pounds posted second-place finishes for the Vikings.

Siuslaw totaled 130 points for third place. Douglas was first with 138.5 and Sutherlin second with 134.5.

Eight of the 14 Vikings in the meet scored: Simmons 28, Tapua 26, Lane 20, Huff 18, Riley Jennings 13, Dylan Jennings 12, Patrick Hill 7 and Salvador Sierra 6.
