Lane is Coast Radio's Athlete of the Week

Junior Kainan Lane was named Coast Radio's Athlete of the Week Tuesday following his first-place finish at the Far West League Crab Pool wrestling meet Thursday (Feb. 4) at South Umpqua High School in Tri City.

Lane, wrestling at 285 pounds, was one of four Siuslaw Vikings to take first place in the six-school event.

Junior Scott Simmons (132), senior Talamoa Tupua (152) and senior Dylan Jennings (220) also won their weight classes for the Vikings.

Siuslaw has canceled its dual meet Thursday at Philomath.

"We have opted out of Philomath," coach Neil Wartnik said. "We would have had to take an activity bus, not one of the longer busses.

"Since we are sick and weary, I opted out of this competition."

The regional tournament is Feb. 19-20 at Henley High School in Klamath Falls.

The state championships are Feb. 26-27 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

NOTES

Neither of the Vikings two female wrestlers — junior Eyza Abbas Carrasco and senior Getzemani Jaimes — qualified for the girls state championships at last weekend's qualifier at Cottage Grove.

"Eyza was close to qualifying," Wartnik said. "She won two matches and lost two matches (at Cottage Grove)."

A dozen teams are entered in the 4A Special District 3 regional tournament at Henley High School, including all six Far West League schools — Siuslaw, Brookings-Harbor, Douglas/Camas Valley, Marshfield, North Bend and South Umpqua. Others include Henley, Hidden Valley, Klamath Union, Mazama, North Valley and Phoenix.
