Vikings girls win special relay at IAAF worlds


Siuslaw's Morgan Bingham, Destinie Tatum, Annmarie Precht and Mikaela Siegel won the 1A/4A 4x400 relay Saturday in Portland.

The Siuslaw Vikings girls 4x400 relay team made history Saturday night, winning the special 1A/4A race during the IAAF World Track and Field Championships at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.

It marked the first time that high school teams were given the opportunity to run on the same track as the world's best in the 30-year history of the event, according to an IAAF release.

The team of Morgan Bingham, Destinie Tatum, Annmarie Precht and Mikaela Siegel won in 4 minutes, 13.23 seconds, a full 10-second improvement over their time Thursday in the Siuslaw Icebreaker at Hans Petersen Field in Florence.

The same Vikings foursome clocked a 4:23.93 at the Icebreaker, some 18 seconds ahead of second-place North Bend.

Defending 4A state champion Phoenix was second at the special event Saturday. No time was available.

Other 1A/4A schools competing in the special event were East Linn Christian Academy of Lebanon, Oregon; Newport, Molalla and Union.

Some 144 prep sprinters representing 36 schools from Oregon, Washington and Idaho were invited to the event.

There were six total relay races scheduled over three days:

  • Girls 5A/6A, Friday, 5:05 p.m. – Bend, Grants Pass, Lake Oswego, Newberg, Summit, Tigard.
  • Boys 5A/6A, Friday, 5:18 p.m. – Churchill, Lakeridge, Lebanon, Marist, North Medford, Oregon City.
  • Girls 1A/4A, Saturday, 6:10 p.m. – East Linn Christian Academy, Newport, Molalla, Phoenix, Siuslaw, Union.
  • Boys 1A/4A, Saturday, 4:45 p.m. – Catlin Gabel, Cottage Grove, Crook County, Junction City, Regis, Union.
  • Girls Invitational, Sunday, 12:15 p.m.– Central Catholic, Holy Names (WA), Mountain View (ID), Southridge, Sunset, Union (WA).
  • Boys Invitational, Sunday, 12:25 p.m.– Camas (WA), McNary, Mountain View (ID), Tahoma (WA), Tigard, Sheldon.
