Track and field: Vikings' Siegel fourth in Summit Heptathlon

Siuslaw senior Mikaela Siegel won two of the seven events Friday to finish fourth in the Unattached Summit Decathlon/Heptathlon in Bend.

Siegel won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 40.71 seconds and the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.6.

Siegel is the defending 4A state champion in the 100 hurdles.

Two of her field marks were personal bests, including 79 feet, 11.06 inches in the javelin (an improvement of more than 14 feet over her 2015 best) and 31 feet, 1.16 inches in the shot put (an improvement of nearly 6 feet), according to records kept by Athletics.net.

Siegel cost herself a higher finish by failing to clear the high jump bar. She could have added some 500 points by nearing her personal best of 4 feet, 8 inches.

Siegel finished behind three Summit High School athletes in the field of 13, which also included competitors from Elmira, Paisley, West Albany, McMinnville, Gilchrist and East Linn Christian (Lebanon, Oregon).

Junior Camille Weaver won with 4,229 points, followed by junior Megan Cornett with 3,564 and freshman Michaela Gorman with 3,344.

Siegel followed with 3,229 points — 235 out of second place. She finished fifth in both 2015 (with 3,384 points) and 2014 (3,374 points) in the same competition.

Newport senior Brendan Thurber-Blaser won the boys decathlon with a total of 6,541. Senior Austin Linville of East Linn Christian was second with 4,934.
