Siuslaw splits doubleheader with Douglas

Siuslaw junior righthander Michael Larson flirted with a no-hitter in the first game and Douglas sophomore Jace Johnson fired a 4-hit shutout in the second game as the two Far West League schools split a baseball doubleheader Friday in Winston.

Larson tossed five no-hit innings before tiring with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back hits chased Larson and brought on Kenneth Thrall, who induced a pop out and a groundout with runners on second and third to preserve the shutout.

Thrall walked three batters to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but posted two strikeouts and a pop out to shortstop to end the game.

Senior Michael Mason gave Larson all the runs he needed with a three-run home run to left field in the top of the first.

Thrall was on base all four at bats in the opener with back-to-back doubles, a hit by pitch and reaching on an error.

Sophomore Darren Stinnett and freshman Gabe Simington, the bottom two batters in the order, scored two runs each for the Vikings.

The split left Siuslaw with a 2-3 record in league, 5-8 overall.

Douglas is 2-3 and 4-8.

The Vikings host North Bend at 5 p.m. Tuesday and South Umpqua in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday.
