Viking band comes to play, but fails to place

The Siuslaw High School band was one of six teams that did not place Wednesday in the Oregon School Activities Association 4A state championships in Corvallis.

North Bend successfully defended its title with a total score of 332 points. Philomath was second at 322, followed by Scappoose with 317, Douglas with 315 and Cascade with 304.

Point totals for the six schools that did not place were not disclosed.

Scores were based on performance and sight reading.

The Vikings band was the first of 11 schools to perform in the 4A competition, a possible disadvantage. Siuslaw was competing in the OSAA championships for the first time in nine years.

The band is directed by Chris Rowbotham, who is in the fifth year of building the program.

Other schools competing in 4A included La Grande, Gladstone, Mazama, South Umpqua and Seaside.

Earlier, Pleasant Hill won the 3A title with 307 points despite a 5-point over-time penalty.

Warrenton was second with 300, Rainier third with 286 and Amity fourth with 239.

Also competing in 3A were Santiam Christian, Sheridan and Glide.

Orchestra competition will be held Thursday, 2A/1A and 5A band competition Friday and 6A band competition Saturday.
