Vikings' Oliver, Tatum, Bingham triumph

Siuslaw's Carissa Oliver won the shot put, Destinie Tatum the high jump and Morgan Bingham the 3,000 meters Friday at the Far West League league district track and field championships at Douglas High School in Winston.

Marshfield holds a one-point lead over Siuslaw after the first day of finals, 56-55. North Bend has 34, South Umpqua 28, Brookings-Harbor 16 and Douglas 5.

Oliver won with a personal-record 39 feet, 3 inches. Annabel Tupua was a scoring seventh at 31-2 and Madison Reynolds was ninth at 29-7.

Tatum won with a personal-record leap of 5 feet, 1 inch.

Bingham was timed in a personal-record 10 minutes, 44.01 seconds for first place, while Celie Mans was second in 10:44.02.

The 3,000 was the first of five girls finals scheduled for Day 1 of the two-day championships.

Marshfield's Allison McKenzie won the javelin at 133-1. Three Vikings in the event did not score, with Oliver finishing 10th, Tupua 11th and Calin Mason 14th.

Vikings Mikaela Siegel, Annmarie Precht and Abby Watkins went 3-4-5 in the long jump, with Siegel (personal-record 16-7.5) and Precht (16-6.75) both meeting the state qualifying standard of 16-5.

In qualifying Friday, Precht and Watkins advanced to the finals of the 100 meters, while Kaeli Ramos, Tatum and McKenzie Colton advanced to the finals of the 400.

In the hurdles, Siegel and Kaylee Graham advanced to the finals of the 100 high hurdles, while Siegel, Graham and Sierra Potter advanced to the finals of the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Tatum and Ramos also qualified for Saturday's 800 finals. Top-qualifier Precht and Mason advanced to Saturday's 200 finals.

Senior Mikaela Siegel is the defending state 4A champion in the 100-meter high hurdles, and has the top time among girls 4A runners this season. She plans to compete for Idaho State next year. ...

Sierra Potter is the only other senior on the girls team. A veteran cross country and distance runner, she opted for all new events this season, and is entered in the 100 and 300 hurdles, the pole vault and the long jump at district. ...

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for nonparticipating students. ... The awards ceremony is 3 p.m. Saturday.
