Vikings will try to get off on right foot early

Siuslaw junior middle distance aces Morgan Bingham and Celie Mans try to get the Vikings girls team off on the right foot early Friday in the Oregon School Activities Association 4A state track and field championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Both are entered in the girls 3,000-meter finals scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.

Mans has 4A's second-best time this season in the event at 10 minutes, 27.52a seconds, while Bingham has the No. 5 time of 10:44.01, which she ran last Friday in winning the Far West League district title.

The Vikings boys also are looking for a fast start, with sophomore Trent Reavis and freshman Murray Bingham competing in finals Friday. Reavis is in both the discus (at 9 a.m.) and the shot put (11:45 a.m.) and Bingham in the 3,000 meters (10:15 a.m.).

The Vikings girls have six athletes in individual events this weekend, including juniors Destinie Tatum and Carissa Oliver, as well as Morgan Bingham, Mans, Precht and Siegel.

Tatum won district titles in the 400 and 800 meters and the high jump. She also will anchor Siuslaw's district-champion 4x400 relay team. She is ranked No. 7 in the 400, No. 2 in the 800 and No. 4 in the high jump.

The 4x400 relay team is ranked No. 3. The district-champion team included freshman Kaeli Ramos, Precht, Bingham and Tatum.
