New Florence soccer association kicks off

The Siuslaw Youth Soccer Association, serving Florence-area youth ages 5-18, has begun registration for its inaugural fall season, which kicks off in September and finishes with a tournament in early November.

The SYSA will be taking on players previously served by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Lane County, which no longer will offer the sport.

The SYSA is a newly formed, not-for-profit soccer club that is "now running the soccer program in Florence," according to its website.

The City of Florence has shown its support by purchasing soccer goals for Miller Park. Practice begins in early September and first matches tentatively are scheduled for Sept. 17.

"Our goal in the coming months and years (is) to have soccer available to players 5-18, to compete against other coastal clubs, and to bring tournaments to our wonderful coastal town," the SYSA says in its mission statement.

Siuslaw High School is the only school of 40 in classification 4A not to field soccer, and the club wants to fill a perceived need in the community.

SYSA officers include president Cameron Jagoe, vice president Erin Linton, treasurer Londi Tomaro, secretary Tim Tregoning and registrar Amy Tregoning.

The SYSA is affiliated with the Oregon Youth Soccer Association.
