New broadcast team will cover the Vikings

Bob Sneddon, left, and Lance Haberly, right, have been Coast Radio's broadcast team for Siuslaw Vikings football for the past decade.

Coast Radio will kick off its 27th season of Siuslaw Vikings football broadcasts on Sept. 2 with both a new play-by-play announcer and a new color commentator.

Coast Radio stalwart Bob Sneddon will do the play-by-play, replacing Lance Haberly, and Ethan Dougherty will do the color and game statistics, taking over for Sneddon.

Vikings games will air live on KCST 106.9-FM, and will be available for download on kcst.com within 48 hours, and often that same night.

"I'm especially looking forward to this season, my first as football play-by-play," Sneddon said. "Not simply for that reason, however.

"When Lance Haberly announced he wouldn't be joining me in the booth this year, my first thought was of Ethan Dougherty to step in."

It was more than a marriage of two big-time sports fans. Dougherty, a mathematics teacher at Siuslaw Middle School, is Sneddon's son-in-law.

"I knew I needed someone who had the focus and will keep good statistics during the game," Sneddon said. "I also wanted someone who could interpret those stats and talk about them in the context of the game.

"Having taught many of the (Vikings players) when they were in middle school, Ethan also will be able to give listeners a little insight as to the kids and their relationship with their teammates."

Sneddon and Dougherty share more than a broadcast booth.

"We share two very important people, his bride Kady (Sneddon's daughter) and his daughter Olive (Sneddon's granddaughter)," Sneddon said.

"I very much look forward to traveling to away games with (Ethan) and building our relationship."

Sneddon says Dougherty was an outstanding prep athlete in Santa Cruz, Calif., and that he has continued to be an avid sports fan.

"He knows what he's talking about when commenting on play."

The 2016 season will be Sneddon's 11th covering the Vikings.

"It's always our intention to (not only) bring a good description of action on the field," he said, "but also to bring some personality to the broadcast, so that it's informative and entertaining."

Kickoff for Vikings games is 7 p.m., with Coast Radio beginning its broadcast with a pregame show at 6:45.
