Siuslaw Vikings junior varsity football for the 2016 season still has a lifeline, according to athletic director Chris Johnson.

"There is still hope for the league season at this time," he said Friday. "Stay tuned."

Johnson announced that the three preseason games have been cancelled, including the season opener next Friday (Sept. 2) at Elmira.

Also cancelled were the scheduled home opener vs. Pleasant Hill on Sept. 12 and a game at Newport on Sept. 19.

Should the Vikings field a JV team for Far West League play, there would be three home games at Hans Petersen Field and two road games.

Home games would be Sept. 26 vs. Douglas, Oct. 10 vs. Marshfield and Oct. 17 vs. South Umpqua.

Road games would be Oct. 3 at North Bend and Oct. 24 at Brookings-Harbor.

Games would be played on Mondays at 5:30 p.m.

All Vikings out for football this fall — freshman through senior — currently are on the varsity, which hosts its annual Blue-Gold Game at 7 p.m. today (Aug. 26) at Hans Petersen Field.

Pat Wondra is head coach of the junior varsity.

Assistant coaches are Dennis Davidson, Kellyn Davidson and Jeff Gray.
