Vikings lineman is a hair better than most

If you haven't noticed senior lineman Robert Fleming, you haven't been watching Siuslaw Vikings football.

He's hard to miss at 250 pounds.

And he's 6-foot-4, maybe 6-5. Perhaps nearly 7 foot, with the hair.

"The hair," he laughed, recalling head coach Jamin Pool's introduction of players Friday before the start of the Blue-Gold Game at Hans Petersen Field. "Coach had to mention the hair."

Fleming's curly golden locks spray out every which way, often covering his face.

"I get compliments on it every day, almost," he said. "And I've gotten used to it in my eyes."

If you haven't noticed him on the field, perhaps you have during a trip to the popular A Taste of Hawaii food truck in front of the Old School Furniture Store on Highway 101. Fleming has been putting in many hours there since Rhody Days 2015.

"I would like to do culinary after high school," Fleming said. "Something in the cooking business. Maybe a food truck. That would be cool."

Before he one day puts his sushi-rolling skills to use, he wants to roll a few offensive linemen and pancake some defensive players during his final season with the Vikings.

"I like the new offense. It seems like we do a lot more passing," he said. "Blocking is a lot different, not such a heavy stance. You don't have to be as fast as last year, but you have to keep your feet."

Fleming became a starter as a junior, and Far West League coaches took notice. Fleming and Vikings senior center Michael Larson were both named second-team all-stars.

The pair anchor an offensive line that features four seniors and a junior.

"The offensive line has been working incredibly well together," Pool said after the Blue-Gold Game. "Their communication is on point, their understanding of what they're supposed to do together on each play.

"They're exceeding my expectations, which across the board has been kind of awesome."

Fleming starts at left tackle, while senior Kainan Lane mans right tackle. Senior Marcos Reyna is at right guard, junior Sal Sierra at left.

"Robert's got some improvement to do that he's been working real hard at," Pool said. "He's made leaps and bounds in improvement.

"On his overall ability, he's been a stud. He really has been."

Fleming went into the Blue-Gold Game looking for gold, but came out singing the blues.

"This was my fourth one, and I haven't won one," he said, with a bemused smile. "I've always been on the losing team."

Fleming, Lane and Sierra were drafted onto the Gold team, Larson and Reyna the Blue.

Final: Blue 20, Gold 14, the Blue winning on the final play of the game.

Now it's on to Elmira for Friday's season opener, and let the winning begin.

"I feel this season will be a good one," Fleming said. "And I feel I'll have a good year. It'll be fun."
