The Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club has raised a war chest of roughly $65,000, thanks largely to its highly successful annual auction-dinner in August, new club treasurer Vicki Soran reported at Monday's monthly meeting.

Now the club needs a battle cry, in the form of a set of goals for the 2016-17 school year, and a war chief, in the form of a new president.

Gina Castro-Brandt, who serves on the board as the most recent past president, presided over Monday's meeting, the club's first since the final meeting of the 2015-16 school year on June 14.

The club begins its new year with Jennifer Waggoner as vice-president, Diane Conlee as secretary, Soran as treasurer, Kim Pickell as membership chair and Rachelle Campbell as member at large.

Waggoner again will chair the auction-dinner, by far the club's largest fundraiser, and she projects a bigger and better Booster Barn Bash when it returns to the King Family farm next summer.

That will be doing something, since this year's auction-dinner netted nearly $50,000. Previous years have netted between $25,000 and $30,000, according to the club's website.

Membership also got a boost at the auction-dinner, with 124 signing up at the event, including 79 new members, according to Pickell.

The Hall of Fame dinner-induction ceremony — held Aug. 19, for the first time at Three Rivers Casino Resort — was another success story, Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said. It likely will return to the casino next summer.

Of immediate concern to the club is assuring there is enough in the Ian Foster Fund for fall scholarships. Last year, 84 middle school and high school student-athletes were helped by the fund, which covers participation fees for those who otherwise could not afford to pay.

Under new business, Siuslaw High School vice principal Corky Franklin proposed two new fundraisers — a golf tournament in April or May and a bingo night.

A board-only goals-setting meeting will be held Sept. 12, and the club is seeking suggestions.

Some recent big-budget items have included new weight-room equipment, middle-school scoreboards and a new scoreboard for football and track and field at Hans Petersen Field.

The club also donates to the actual cost of programs at the middle school and high school, including paying for new uniforms as needed.
