One last time? Mans, Hutton race Saturday

The Woahink Lake Invitational will feature one last showdown between Bandon's Sailor Hutton (left) and Siuslaw's Celie Mans (right).

Runners from 20 Oregon high schools toe the line Saturday for the annual Woahink Lake Cross Country Invitational at Honeyman State Park.

The event is hosted by Siuslaw High School, with Vikings coach and athletic director Chris Johnson the meet director.

Girls defending champion Sailor Hutton, a junior at Bandon, and 4A state champion Celie Mans, a senior at Siuslaw, may be meeting for one last time in a rivalry that dates to their middle school years.

Hutton edged Mans earlier this season at the North Bend Tugman Invitational, winning in 18 minutes, 32.85 seconds. Mans ran a season-best 18:36.00.

Hutton's time is the best among 1A/2A/3A runners this season, while Mans' time is the state's best 4A time by more than 40 seconds.

The Vikings are in the middle of a rare two-week interval between races, last competing Sept. 17 at the Northwest Classic in Eugene.

"We should be ready to race after the break we've had," Johnson said.

The 5,000-meter varsity girls race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., the boys at 1:15 p.m. The junior varsity boys run at 11:45 a.m. and the JV girls at 1:45 p.m.

The 3,000-meter middle school girls race is 10 a.m., the boys at 10:30 a.m.

Other high schools entering runners include Brookings-Harbor, Central Catholic, Coquille, Elmira, Gold Beach, Grants Pass, Mapleton, Marshfield, Mohawk, North Bend, Oakland, Pacific, Philomath, Reynolds, Roseburg, Sutherlin, West Linn and Yoncalla.

South Eugene, which won both varsity boys and girls in 2015, is not entered.

There also will be runners from 12 middle schools, including Azalea, Coquille, Creswell, Driftwood, Fremont, Harbor Lights, Joseph Lane, Marshfield, Mohawk, Monroe, North Bend and Siuslaw.

The event manager is Athletic Timing.

Rain is forecast for the day of the event.

"It never rains at Woahink," Johnson said.

After Woahink, the Vikings have three more events before the Far West League championships on Oct. 27 at Tugman State Park.

Siuslaw will have runners at the Paul Mariman Invitational on Oct. 8 at Philomath, the George Fox Classic on Oct. 15 at Willamette Mission State Park in Brooks and at the Vikings' own Run for the Brownies on Oct. 20 at Sandpines Golf Links.
